YouTube recently implemented a new policy that allows individuals to request the removal of AI-generated content that features their likeness. This policy, discovered by TechCrunch’s Sarah Perez, gives users the ability to flag videos that have been altered or created using artificial intelligence to make it look or sound like them.

There are several factors that YouTube will consider when determining whether to remove the content. These include whether the content is altered or synthetic, whether it is easily recognizable as the person in question, and whether it could be mistaken for a parody or satire. Additionally, YouTube will take into account if the video includes a public figure engaging in sensitive behavior such as crime, violence, or endorsing a product or political candidate. This is especially important during an election year, as noted by TechCrunch.

This new policy falls under YouTube’s privacy violation guidelines, rather than misleading content rules. In most cases, YouTube now requires claims to be made by the individual themselves. However, there are exceptions for minors, individuals without computer access, or deceased persons.

Upon receiving a complaint, YouTube will give the alleged violator 48 hours to take action. If the content is removed within this timeframe, the case will be considered closed. If not, YouTube will step in to review the situation. Removal of the content means not only taking down the video, but also removing the individual’s name and personal information from the title, description, and tags. Blurring out faces is another option provided by YouTube, while setting the video to private is not allowed as it could easily be made public again by the uploader.

Although YouTube did not make a big announcement about this policy change, it had hinted at it earlier this year when outlining its guidelines for AI-generated videos. The platform had stated its commitment to developing an updated privacy process for individuals to request the removal of content that simulates an identifiable individual using AI technology.

Overall, this new policy aims to protect individuals from having their likeness used in AI-generated content without their consent. It provides users with a way to take control of how their image and voice are being manipulated online, especially in cases where the content may be misleading or harmful.
