The construction industry is a major contributor to waste production in both the European Union and the United States. Sensorita, a startup based in Oslo, aims to address this issue by providing reliable data through their digital twin technology.

According to Sensorita’s co-founder and CEO Ulrikke Lien, the lack of accurate data in the construction industry is a significant challenge. Many waste management companies struggle to keep track of their bins, leading to inefficiencies in waste collection. Sensorita’s solution involves placing sensors in construction waste bins and using radar and machine learning to create digital twins. This technology allows waste companies to monitor the fill levels of their bins and optimize their pickup schedules.

Lien initially conceived the idea for Sensorita in 2020 while studying engineering at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The company originally targeted the household waste sector but pivoted to focus on construction waste due to the challenges in the former market. Since launching its first pilot in February 2022, Sensorita has garnered interest from several customers, including a large construction company called Ragn-Sells.

With $3.25 million in venture funding, Sensorita plans to expand its team and enhance its technology. The company aims to introduce new features, such as the ability to identify the type of material in a garbage bin and the development of a virtual assistant for the waste management industry. By providing valuable insights and data, Sensorita hopes to streamline waste management processes and reduce costs for construction companies.

Sensorita’s innovative approach to construction waste management has attracted the attention of investors like Brick and Mortar Ventures and Telenor. The company’s focus on leveraging technology to address the challenges in the industry positions them as a pioneering force in the waste management sector. As Sensorita continues to grow and expand its reach beyond Norway, it is poised to make a significant impact on the construction industry’s sustainability efforts.
