Apple has reached a settlement in a class action lawsuit regarding faulty MacBook keyboards, which will result in payouts to eligible individuals. The settlement applies to those who purchased a MacBook with a butterfly keyboard between 2015 and 2019 and received keyboard repairs or service for their system.

If you had at least two topcase replacements within four years of purchase, you could receive up to $395, while those with one topcase replacement may be eligible for up to $125. For those who only had keycap replacements, the payout would be a maximum of $50. The deadline for filing a claim was March 6, and if you submitted a claim asserting that the repairs did not fix the keyboard issues, you will receive an automatic payment notification from Apple.

The entire process has been lengthy, with the settlement reached in July 2022, court approval in May 2023, and the payment order issued in June 2024. Apple’s decision to switch to a butterfly keyboard design was met with complaints from users who experienced key sticking and jamming due to dust and debris. This led to the lawsuit, in which Apple denied any wrongdoing and maintained that the MacBooks were not defective, despite reverting to a standard keyboard design in 2019.

It is essential for affected MacBook owners to stay informed about the settlement process and ensure they have met all the necessary requirements to receive their payout. As the payouts are expected to be issued by August 2024, eligible individuals should keep an eye on their email for notifications from Apple regarding their automatic payments.

The resolution of this class action lawsuit serves as a reminder of the importance of product quality and consumer satisfaction. Companies must prioritize the functionality and reliability of their products to avoid such legal disputes and maintain a positive reputation among their customers. Apple’s response to the MacBook keyboard issues highlights the significance of addressing user concerns promptly and effectively to uphold brand loyalty and trust in the long run.
