Many gamers enjoy playing their favorite games in extra-difficult modes to test their skills and challenge themselves. In the case of Stardew Valley, a popular farming simulation game, a new “hardcore” option has been created by a player to add an extra layer of challenge.

Software engineer Sylvie Nightshade developed this high difficulty mod on June 21 after being inspired by an article on the satirical website Hard Drive. The article humorously suggested a hardcore mode in Stardew Valley that would delete players’ progress if they used a guide while playing. Taking the joke to the next level, Nightshade turned this idea into reality by creating the mod and sharing it on GitHub.

The mod works by scanning the titles of open windows or tabs while the game is running. If the title includes “Stardew Valley Wiki,” the mod will delete the player’s save file, essentially erasing all of their hard work. Nightshade even added a feature that closes the browser window containing the wiki to further discourage players from using guides.

This unique twist on gameplay difficulty is reminiscent of other instances where life imitates art in the gaming world. For example, Hello Kitty Island Adventure was eventually launched on Apple Arcade years after being mentioned in a South Park episode as a joke.

If you’re a Stardew Valley player looking to take on the challenge of hardcore mode, remember that using guides on your phone while playing on your computer may be a safer bet. By avoiding the use of guides altogether, you can truly test your skills and enjoy the game in its most challenging form.
