The Television Academy recently announced the nominees for the 2024 Emmys, with a total of 18 nominations for transmedia adaptations. Amazon Prime’s Fallout series raked in 16 nominations, while Peacock’s Twisted Metal series also received a nod.
Fallout received nominations in prestigious categories such as Best Drama Series, Best Writing for a Drama Series, and Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Walton Goggins’ role as The Ghoul. The series also secured nominations in technical categories like production design, costumes, makeup, and special visual effects. Additionally, Fallout’s interactive experience, Vault 33, was recognized in the Best Emerging Media category.
With a total of 17 nominations, Fallout is tied with three other series for the seventh most nominated program at the 2024 Emmys. FX’s Shogun leads the pack with 25 nominations, followed by FX’s The Bear, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, HBO/Max’s True Detective: Night Country, and Netflix’s The Crown. Eligible programs aired between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024.
Twisted Metal, on the other hand, earned a nomination for Best Stunt Coordination in a Comedy category.
In the previous year, The Last of Us made history as the first gaming transmedia adaptation to receive Emmy nominations, with HBO’s adaptation securing 24 nominations. Fallout now has the chance to clinch its first win in a top category at this year’s Emmys. Netflix’s Arcane, based on Riot Games’ League of Legends, also made waves by winning four Emmys in 2022, including Best Animated Program.
The recognition of gaming transmedia adaptations by both audiences and critics indicates a growing trend in the entertainment industry. With upcoming adaptations like Tomb Raider, Like a Dragon: Yakuza, and Arcane Season 2 in 2024, critics will have more shows to consider for future nominations.
Fans can catch the 76th Emmys on September 15 on ABC to see if Fallout takes home any of the top awards. The creative Emmys will be distributed on September 7-8. The nominations list includes various categories for Fallout and Twisted Metal, showcasing the talent and effort put into these transmedia adaptations.
