Rivian, an electric vehicle company, has recently unveiled its first EV charging rest stop near Yosemite National Park in Groveland, California. This innovative charging outpost offers a range of amenities including bathrooms, a lounge area with a small library, a water refill station, free coffee, and a “make your own” trail mix station for Rivian owners. However, the other facilities are open to the general public.
The Rivian Yosemite Charging Outpost is equipped with five DC fast chargers and is conveniently located near the park’s west entrance, replacing an old gas station. While the shop area operates from 7AM to 7PM, the bathrooms and chargers are accessible 24/7. This marks Rivian’s first foray into infrastructure development, expanding its network of charging sites with a focus on sustainability.
Rivian currently operates 58 Waypoint charging sites supporting electric vehicles that use the standard J1772 plug in the Yosemite Valley area. Additionally, there is a Rivian-exclusive Adventure charging site near the park’s east entrance. The company has ambitious plans to establish more Charging Outposts near national parks and high-traffic locations nationwide.
The design of the first Charging Outpost prioritizes eco-friendliness by minimizing waste and incorporating sustainable features. The retaining wall is constructed using materials from the old parking lot and sidewalk, while solar panels and a passive cooling system aim to reduce energy consumption. Rivian’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond this project, with plans to install over 3,500 Adventure Network DC fast chargers in 600 locations across the US and Canada. Moreover, approximately 10,000 Level 2 chargers will be accessible to the public, further promoting the adoption of electric vehicles.
