Focus Universal Pictures and Focus Features have finally unveiled the trailer for Robert Eggers’ highly anticipated remake of the classic 1922 horror film, Nosferatu. The trailer, however, keeps the appearance of Bill Skarsgård’s Count Orlok a mystery, with characters teasing his impending arrival this Christmas.

For Eggers, Nosferatu is a project of passion. In a 2016 interview with Indiewire, he described the remake as something that feels “ugly and blasphemous and egomaniacal and disgusting” for a filmmaker in his position to undertake. This sentiment is understandable, especially considering the success of Werner Herzog’s 1979 remake, Nosferatu the Vampyre, starring Isabelle Adjani and Klaus Kinski, along with its iconic soundtrack by Popul Vuh. The composer for the upcoming Nosferatu 2024, Robin Carolan, faces the challenge of living up to the legacy of the film.

The question arises: will Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Count Orlok be able to match Max Schreck’s iconic performance? Can Eggers capture the same sense of dread that Murnau’s film evoked? Perhaps, it’s best not to make comparisons and allow the new version to stand on its own. As the original film warns, “beware that his shadow doth not burden your dreams with horrible fears.”

The star-studded cast of Nosferatu includes Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, Nicholas Hoult as Thomas Hutter, Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Friedrich Harding, Emma Corrin as Anna Harding, Willem Dafoe as Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, Simon McBurney as Herr Knock, and Ralph Ineson as Dr. Wilhelm Sievers. The film is currently set for a theatrical release on December 25.
