Google has recently announced that the latest Pixel Watch Update will bring Wear OS 5 to the original Pixel Watch and the Pixel Watch 2. This update is starting to roll out in phases, so don’t worry if you don’t see it right away as an over-the-air update. Along with bug fixes and security patches, Wear OS 5 will bring some exciting new features to the previous generation Pixel Watches.
Wear OS 5 isn’t a complete redesign, but it does offer some changes that users will appreciate. Some of the new features include new colors for watch faces, more widgets to choose from, and the ability to display different data metrics on the watch face. The new app grid launcher from the Pixel Watch 3 will also be available on the Pixel Watch 1 and 2, making it easier to find and view all your apps. Additionally, better camera controls will allow you to use your Pixel Watch as a viewfinder for your smartphone’s camera, making it more practical.
Google promises that Wear OS 5 will bring many quality-of-life improvements, including bug fixes and performance updates. To be eligible for the update, make sure your first- or second-generation Pixel Watch is running either Wear OS 3.5 or Wear OS 4. The update is part of the September 2024 update, which is currently rolling out in waves.
To check for the update, swipe down from the watch face on your Pixel Watch, tap Settings, then navigate to System and System Updates. If an update is available, you can install it and wait for your Pixel Watch to download, install, and restart. It’s great to see Google continuing to support its previous generation Pixel Watches with updates like Wear OS 5.
