AMD’s desktop CPU market share has experienced a significant increase of almost 10 percent in the past year, according to a recent report by Mercury Research. This growth comes on the heels of AMD’s successful launch of its latest desktop gaming CPU.
Mercury Research, a reputable analyst firm that tracks market share data for PC CPUs, revealed that AMD has made substantial gains across various segments of the CPU market. The portion of the report focusing on AMD was provided to journalists by the company itself and was subsequently confirmed by Mercury.
Specifically, AMD’s desktop market share in terms of units saw a notable increase of 9.6 percentage points, bringing its total share to 28.7 percent. In the mobile CPU market, AMD now holds 22.3 percent, representing a 2.8 percentage point increase. While Intel traditionally dominates with an 80 percent market share, AMD has secured a significant portion of the remaining 20 percent in overall client processors.
The success of AMD’s existing Ryzen 7000X, 8000G, and 9000X chips in the desktop segment indicates strong momentum for the company. Despite mixed reviews and performance challenges with the 9000X series, AMD’s sales have been robust over the past year. The recent launch of the Ryzen 9000X3D chips has generated positive feedback, with many reviewers praising their performance as superior to Intel’s offerings.
In contrast, Intel is currently navigating layoffs and financial losses, which have raised concerns among analysts about the company’s future direction. Intel’s foundry plan and challenges related to securing CHIPS Act funding have also come under scrutiny. President-elect Trump’s intentions to potentially revise the CHIPS Act further add to the uncertainty surrounding Intel’s operations.
It’s important to note that while Mercury’s report provides valuable insights into market share trends, revenue figures cited by AMD may not align precisely with Mercury’s data. According to AMD, the company has achieved a record server revenue share of 33.9 percent, underscoring its growing presence in the server market. Additionally, the report excludes AMD’s sales of semicustom chips for game consoles and IoT devices.
Overall, AMD’s impressive performance in the desktop CPU market highlights the company’s competitive position against Intel and its potential for continued growth. As the tech industry evolves, AMD’s strategic product launches and market share gains position it as a key player in the CPU market moving forward.
