Apple is reportedly planning to introduce a new feature to its AirPods in the coming years – built-in cameras. This information comes from a report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who stated that Apple will start mass-producing AirPods with camera modules by 2026. The camera would be an IR camera, similar to the Face ID receiver found on iPhones.

But why would Apple want to put a camera on AirPods, you may wonder? According to Kuo, these camera-equipped AirPods will likely be used with Apple’s Vision Pro and future headsets to enhance the spatial audio experience. Spatial audio creates a 3D environment where sound seems to be coming from all around you. The current AirPods models already offer spatial audio, but the addition of a camera would take it a step further by responding to your movements. For example, turning your head could adjust the sound direction, and in-air gestures might be used to control the audio.

Kuo highlighted that Apple’s focus on hardware, software, and services has always been about strengthening the ecosystem’s competitiveness. With the advancement of spatial computing, Apple aims to stay ahead of the curve and drive growth in this area. Foxconn, Apple’s partner and supplier, will be responsible for manufacturing the IR camera, with a target of producing 18-20 million units, equivalent to around 10 million AirPods, depending on market demand.

The inclusion of cameras in AirPods could open up new possibilities for augmented reality experiences and innovative interactions with audio content. This move by Apple reflects its commitment to pushing boundaries and delivering cutting-edge technology to its users. As spatial computing becomes more prevalent, consumers can expect Apple to continue leading the way in creating immersive and engaging experiences.
