Newzoo recently conducted a Global Gamer Study for the year and shared some interesting findings about how different generations engage with the gaming industry. The study revealed that newer generations, such as Gen Z and Alpha, are actively involved in playing games and consuming content related to gaming. While many gamers stick to a few popular games, there is a subset of players who are constantly looking for and exploring new games that are trending online.
According to the survey of 73,000 global gamers, Gen Z and Alpha gamers expressed a preference for open-world games that allow for exploration and games with deep, engaging storylines. These generations also enjoy adventure, fighting, and shooter genres. When it comes to spending on games, about half of console players fall into the medium-to-high spending category, while the percentage is lower for PC and mobile players.
The report highlighted that Gen Z and Alpha gamers are among the most enthusiastic players, with 86% and 94% of these generations reporting that they play video games. In comparison, 85% of millennials, 67% of Gen Xers, and 50% of Boomers play video games. Gen Z and Alpha gamers also consume a lot of gaming-related content, with 79% and 80% respectively reporting that they watch games frequently.
Interestingly, the study found that a significant number of gamers, especially Gen Z, are actively seeking out new and trending games. Around 31% of gamers are looking for new games, with 42% of them being Gen Z, 15% Gen Alpha, and 34% millennials. These players not only seek out new games but also consume a lot of gaming-related content, with 58% of them considering gaming as their favorite pastime.
To attract the attention of Gen Z gamers, it is essential for new games to leverage social media and gaming content platforms. The study revealed that 81% of Gen Z gamers are influenced by media when it comes to their gameplay and purchasing decisions. Platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok are popular among Gen Z gamers for engaging with gaming content, and many of them are open to making in-game purchases and interacting with non-gaming brands that enter the gaming space.
In conclusion, the gaming industry is seeing a significant shift in consumer behavior, with Gen Z and Alpha gamers emerging as key players in the market. To capture the attention of these generations, game developers and brands need to focus on creating engaging content, leveraging social media platforms, and staying up-to-date with the latest trends in the gaming industry. By understanding the preferences and behaviors of Gen Z gamers, companies can tailor their offerings to meet the demands of this growing and influential audience.
