In the latest episode of The Acolyte, Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh showcased the long-awaited Star Wars concept of the Lightwhip. This unique weapon has been in development for almost 40 years and finally made its on-screen debut. While it may not be the strangest lightsaber in the Star Wars universe, the Lightwhip is a significant addition.
The Lightwhip, as seen in Vernestra’s lightsaber, is a modification of the traditional lightsaber rather than a separate weapon. In the Expanded Universe, Lightwhips operated using smaller emitters and crystals to create a flexible beam of energy. This design allowed for a longer range compared to a standard lightsaber, but sacrificed some cutting strength. Additionally, Lightwhips were more vulnerable to damage and shorting out due to their volatile nature.
Originating from the Expanded Universe, the Lightwhip was first introduced as the weapon of the Dark Lady Lumiya, a Sith and one of the Emperor’s Hands. Lumiya’s unique lightwhip featured extra tassels made from Mandalorian Iron, which inspired Luke Skywalker to create the Shoto Lightsaber. Throughout the Expanded Universe, the Lightwhip became associated with ancient Sith weaponry from the time of the New Sith Wars.
In current Star Wars continuity, Vernestra is the only known wielder of a lightwhip. Her modified lightsaber was introduced in the 2021 High Republic novel A Test of Courage. Vernestra kept the modification a secret due to the Lightwhip’s history as an unorthodox weapon and its connection to the Nightsisters of Dathomir.
The introduction of the Lightwhip adds a new layer of complexity to the Star Wars universe, showcasing the evolution of lightsaber technology and combat styles. Fans are excited to see how this unique weapon will be further explored in future Star Wars media.
