The race to bring AI-driven humanoid robots into homes and workplaces worldwide has reached a new level with Figure, a company backed by OpenAI and others, unveiling its latest model, Figure 02. The company raised $675 million in its last funding round in February and has set the release date for August 6, 2024.
In a teaser video released by Figure, viewers get a glimpse of the robot’s design, showcasing robotic joints, limbs, and innovative mesh designs for the body. The video also reveals torque ratings of up to 150Nm and a range of motion of 195 degrees. Founder Brett Adcock claims that Figure 02 is the most advanced humanoid robot on the planet.
Adcock, known for founding startups like Archer Aviation and Vettery, launched Figure AI in 2022. The company emerged from stealth mode in March 2023 with Figure 01, a humanoid robot designed to address labor shortages in various industries. With key investors like NVidia, Microsoft, Intel Capital, and Bezos Expeditions, Figure AI aims to enhance productivity and safety by automating tasks in sectors like manufacturing, logistics, and retail.
Competition in the humanoid robotics sector is heating up, with companies unveiling AI-infused robots for different settings. The use of generative AI and large language models is revolutionizing the field, enabling robots to analyze live inputs and respond with human-like actions. Elon Musk has even predicted a market for over 10 billion humanoid robots on Earth, with Tesla Motors developing its own robot called Tesla Optimus.
Nvidia’s Project GR00T and Boston Dynamics’ updated Atlas robot are also pushing the boundaries of humanoid robotics. Despite the growing competition, Figure’s strong backing and innovative approach position it well in the market. With the advancements in AI and robotics, the future of humanoid robots looks promising for transforming various industries and daily life.
