Kioxia, a Japanese memory company, has recently introduced a new 2Tb QLC chip using its BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory technology. This chip is designed to be used in SSDs, servers, and other digital storage devices that require high-capacity and efficient memory components. The BiCS FLASH technology by Kioxia allows for vertical and lateral expansion of memory die, while the integration of CBA technology enables denser memory creation and faster interface speeds of up to 3.6Gbps. Compared to their previous generation QLC device, this new product boasts a bit density about 2.3 times higher and 70% greater write power efficiency. By stacking 16 dies in a single memory package, Kioxia’s new QLC chip can achieve a capacity of 4TB.
Hideshi Miyajima, the Chief Technology Officer of Kioxia, emphasized the industry-leading qualities of the 2Tb QLC chip, stating that it will bring new value to AI applications and large storage systems that require power and space efficiency. Pure Storage, a company known for its DirectFlash Module (DFM) storage technology, is set to adopt Kioxia’s new QLC chip. The DFM storage allows for direct communication between all-flash arrays and raw flash storage, offering improved density, efficiency, and longevity compared to traditional SSDs. Pure Storage aims to release 150TB DFMs in 2025 and 300TB DFMs by 2026, with the incorporation of Kioxia’s technology expected to aid in achieving these goals.
In addition to the 2Tb QLC chip, Kioxia has also introduced a new 1Tb QLC memory device to its lineup. This device offers approximately 30% faster sequential write performance and a 15% improvement in read latency compared to the 2Tb QLC chip. It will be utilized in high-performance applications such as client SSDs and mobile devices. Charles Giancarlo, the Chief Executive Officer of Pure Storage, expressed excitement about integrating Kioxia’s BiCS FLASH 2Tb QLC flash memory products into their all-flash storage solutions. Pure Storage’s unified all-flash data storage platform aims to meet the demanding requirements of artificial intelligence while maintaining cost-effective backup storage solutions.
