OpenAI’s VP Anna Makanju recently made headlines with her claims regarding the bias correction capabilities of the company’s AI model, o1. Speaking at the UN’s Summit of the Future event, Makanju suggested that o1 has the potential to significantly reduce bias in AI by self-identifying biases in its responses and adhering more closely to rules guiding appropriate behavior. She stated that models like o1 are able to evaluate their own responses and identify flaws in their reasoning, ultimately creating better and more unbiased outcomes.

While Makanju praised o1 for its ability to analyze and correct its own bias, suggesting that it does so “virtually perfectly,” recent data suggests otherwise. OpenAI’s internal testing found that o1 performed better on average than non-reasoning models in terms of producing toxic, biased, or discriminatory answers. However, when subjected to a bias test involving race-, gender-, and age-related questions, o1 did not outperform OpenAI’s flagship non-reasoning model, GPT-4o in all instances. In fact, o1 was found to be more likely to explicitly discriminate on age and race compared to GPT-4o.

Furthermore, a more affordable version of o1, o1-mini, demonstrated even poorer performance on the bias test. O1-mini was more likely to explicitly discriminate on gender, race, and age, and also showed a higher likelihood of implicit discrimination on age compared to GPT-4o. These findings raise concerns about the effectiveness of reasoning models like o1 in addressing bias in AI systems.

Despite the potential benefits of reasoning models in reducing bias, there are other limitations that need to be addressed. OpenAI acknowledges that o1 offers only a negligible advantage on certain tasks, is slower in response times, and comes at a higher cost compared to non-reasoning models. Some questions posed to o1 take well over 10 seconds to answer, making it less practical for real-time applications. Moreover, the cost of running o1 is significantly higher, ranging from 3x to 4x the cost of GPT-4o, which may deter potential users.
