Apple Intelligence, Apple’s take on artificial intelligence, was revealed at WWDC 2024, showcasing a more pragmatic approach to the technology. Unlike other companies, Apple focused on integrating AI into existing offerings rather than creating standalone features. The platform, powered by large language models (LLM), will enhance existing apps with new AI-driven features.
During the Apple iPhone 16 event, Apple announced a range of AI-powered features, including translation on Apple Watch Series 10, visual search on iPhones, and improved capabilities for Siri. The first wave of Apple Intelligence is set to roll out at the end of October through updates for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Additional features will be introduced in later updates, expanding language support and functionalities.
Apple Intelligence, dubbed “AI for the rest of us” by Cupertino marketing executives, leverages text and image generation capabilities to enhance user experiences. The platform includes Writing Tools for text-related tasks, Genmojis for custom emoji creation, Image Playground for visual content generation, and a revamped Siri interface for seamless integration across apps.
The initial release of Apple Intelligence will be available for free to users with compatible hardware, including select iPhone models, iPads, and Mac devices. While the platform focuses on on-device processing for efficiency and privacy, more complex tasks will utilize Private Cloud Compute for remote server operations.
One of the highlights of Apple Intelligence is its integration with ChatGPT, offering users access to a vast knowledge base and enhanced writing tools. This partnership aims to supplement Siri’s capabilities and provide users with more interactive and personalized experiences. ChatGPT integration will be available in the upcoming updates for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
Looking ahead, Apple plans to collaborate with additional generative AI services, with Google Gemini rumored to be the next partner on the list.
