Who doesn’t like a free performance upgrade, am I right? And guess what, if you own a laptop or a handheld PC with an Intel Core Ultra 200V (Lunar Lake) chip inside, you’re in luck. Intel spilled the beans on Tuesday that the company’s latest graphics driver (32.0.101.6734) is bringing a power-management update that can boost GPU performance by around 10 percent in terms of higher frame rate. Pretty neat, huh?

You’ll be able to experience this upgrade first-hand in handhelds, specifically the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and MSI Claw 7 AI+. But don’t worry, it’s going to be rolled out to other Lunar Lake / Core Ultra 200V systems soon, according to Intel. Essentially, this driver allows for higher performance at the default power level of 17W, which is awesome news for gamers and tech enthusiasts alike.

There are two key improvements with this update: the higher frame rate, and a 25 percent enhancement on what’s known as the “99th percentile” frame rate. Now, you might be wondering, what in the world is the “99th percentile” frame rate, right? Well, it’s basically those rare moments when the frame rate takes a nosedive suddenly. These moments can be a real buzzkill, causing a jitter or hitch in your gameplay. Not really sure why this matters, but it can definitely disrupt timing-driven games and just make everything look bad. With this new graphics update, games will not only run faster but also smoother. So, game on!

And speaking of games, Intel even provided a sample for you to drool over. How thoughtful, right?

Intel has really put in the effort when it comes to software driver development, all to avoid the issues that plagued the first-gen Intel “Alchemist” GPUs. That’s what Intel fellow Tom Petersen spilled to PCWorld’s The Full Nerd podcast back in December. The second-gen Arc B580 “Battlemage” GPU was essentially a tariff-buster, beating the odds before there were even odds to beat.

Now, since the Lunar Lake chips pack the Xe2 GPU that later found its way into Battlemage, it seems likely that Intel’s driver update could work its magic there too. Will we see a similar boost inside the B580 cards? Only time will tell, my friends.

Mark, a tech veteran with 30 years of experience under his belt, has been gracing the pages of PCWorld for the last decade. He’s penned over 3,500 articles for PCWorld alone, delving into topics like PC microprocessors, peripherals, and Microsoft Windows. But Mark’s not just a one-trick pony; his work has also been featured in publications such as PC Magazine, Byte, eWEEK, Popular Science, and Electronic Buyers’ News. He even snagged a Jesse H. Neal Award for breaking news at one point. Recently, Mark had to part ways with his extensive collection of Thunderbolt docks and USB-C hubs because, well, his office just couldn’t handle the clutter anymore.

And there you have it, folks. The tech world is always evolving, and Intel is making sure you get the best out of your hardware with these exciting updates. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the boosted performance coming your way soon.
