We are living in a time where old things are making a comeback unexpectedly. It seems like the Darksiders franchise is returning to the world of video games. THQ Nordic recently released trailers for their upcoming games, one of which featured the Charred Council, a group of stone creatures whose eyes light up in flames as they say the word “Horseman.” The tagline “Be prepared to ride again” leaves fans wondering if it’s a remake or a brand new game. The project will be led by Gunfire Games, the developer behind Remnant 2 and Darksiders III, but there is no information on release dates or platforms yet.
For those who are unfamiliar with Darksiders, the original game from 2010 focused on War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. After triggering the apocalypse prematurely, War is sent to Earth to redeem himself. As the story unfolds, War discovers that he was set up by the Council and ends up calling on his siblings to join him in a battle against Heaven, Hell, and their bosses. However, subsequent games in the series did not follow through on the promise of a four-player experience, with Darksiders II and III focusing on Death and Fury, respectively. The prequel Darksiders: Genesis introduced Strife alongside War in a top-down format.
The Darksiders series is known for its comic book style, with artist Joe Madureira contributing to the design of characters and directing the first two games. Each installment in the series has taken inspiration from different genres, from God of War and Zelda influences in the first two games to Metroidvania and soulslike elements in Darksiders III, and a top-down Diablo style in Genesis.
While many old game franchises have made comebacks, Darksiders stands out for not always delivering on its promises. Fans are hopeful that Gunfire Games and THQ will bring the series back to life and move it forward without disappointing players.
