Google has launched Gemini, a suite of generative AI models, apps, and services. The Gemini models come in four different versions – Ultra, Pro, Flash, and Nano, each with its own set of capabilities. These models are trained to be natively multimodal, allowing them to work with various types of data beyond just text.
Gemini is different from Google’s LaMDA model, as it can understand and generate more than just text. However, there are ethical concerns about training models on public data without consent. Google offers an AI Premium Plan that provides access to Gemini features in various Google Workspace apps like Docs, Slides, and Sheets.
Gemini models are integrated into various Google apps and services for tasks like email writing, content creation, data organization, and more. Gemini Advanced, available through the AI Premium Plan, offers additional features like trip planning, custom travel itineraries, and answering questions about uploaded files.
Gemini is also integrated into Google’s Chrome browser as an AI writing tool and in various other products like Google TV, Google Photos, and NotebookLM. Google developers can leverage Gemini for code completion, code generation, and security analysis. The Gemini models aim to provide a range of multimodal tasks such as transcribing speech and captioning images and videos in real-time.
Gemini Ultra is the most performant model, offering capabilities like helping with physics homework and identifying relevant scientific papers. Gemini Pro is an improvement over LaMDA in reasoning and understanding capabilities. Gemini Flash is designed for less demanding applications, while Gemini Nano can run on some smartphones for features like summarization and Smart Reply in messaging apps.
Google has compared Gemini’s performance to OpenAI’s GPT-4 models, claiming superiority in benchmarks. However, OpenAI’s latest model, GPT-4o, surpasses Gemini in certain areas. The pricing for Gemini models varies based on the version and usage, with pay-as-you-go options and free tiers with usage limits.
There are talks of Apple potentially incorporating Gemini into future iOS updates, along with discussions with OpenAI for generative AI capabilities. Google continues to develop and expand the capabilities of the Gemini models across various platforms and services.
