It seems like Google Gemini is gearing up to bring its AI capabilities to Spotify. Recently, Android Authority discovered a Spotify extension for Google Gemini in the Google App APK teardown. This development implies that soon users will have the ability to manage the music streaming app through Google’s AI platform. Currently, Gemini already offers similar functions for YouTube Music.
With this new extension, Gemini will be able to play music and podcasts while also accessing your Spotify playlists and listening history. This could potentially lead to Gemini initiating conversations about your music preferences or questioning why you’ve been listening to the “Duel of the Fates” from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace all day. The extent of information that Gemini will have access to in order to curate your music choices is a cause for concern.
Android Authority successfully tested the extension, revealing that although it’s not fully polished yet, it presents an intriguing concept. When attempting to play a song, a YouTube Music card initially appears, but the selected song ultimately plays on Spotify. Additionally, users can utilize the chatbot feature by typing “@spotify” along with the desired song title to have the music play in the background without launching the app.
One interesting aspect to ponder is whether the extension will be capable of pulling songs based on lyrics or humming, similar to the “Name that Tune” feature popularized by apps like Shazam. While the extension appears to be nearing completion, it remains uncertain whether this service will be offered for free or if it will be integrated into existing Spotify or Gemini subscriptions. The potential integration of AI into music streaming services opens up new possibilities for users to interact with and discover music in innovative ways.
